As fall arrives, my favorite season, I find myself drawn to darker books that perfectly complement the atmosphere. Recently, I've had the pleasure of finishing a few spooky reads that I highly recommend if you're seeking something not overly terrifying. These include "Tunnel of Bones" by Victoria Schwab, "The Screaming Staircase" by Jonathan Stroud, "The Raven Boys" by Maggie Stiefvater, "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman, and "The Devouring Gray" by Christine Lynn Herman. Currently, I'm engrossed in "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James.
Although I primarily selected books categorized as horror rather than paranormal mysteries or thrillers, it's important to note that they aren't hardcore, gory horror stories. Instead, they offer atmospheric ghostly tales that leave a lingering sense of unease.
I've set a personal goal to complete these nine chosen books by the end of November and share an update with all of you. Stay tuned for my progress!
The Silent Companions ⭕️
This one is a resounding YES! because I wanted to read this for so long. I love that this is a Gothic Victorian mystery where there are two timelines, 1865 which is the present and I guess the other one will be the origin of the haunting which is set in 1635.
The Winter People ⭕️
This is also has a dual timeline between 1908 and present day. I think this one will be a very sad book because it deals with a lost of a child which most of the time I don't choose to read about however I am intrigued with the winter people, which I think might be some kind of zombies.
Snowblind ⭕️
I'm skeptical if this is indeed horror, it reads very cozily. I don't get a sense of foreboding winter atmosphere until the very end of chapter 1 so I think this is a YES for now and if I didn't like the first few chapters than I'll unhaul this.
Those Across the River ❌
This has elements of southern gothic and I feel like this one is genuinely scary and maybe a bit violent and gory too so it's a pass.
Anna Dressed in Blood ⭕️
I have been looking for a paranormal ghost hunting book so this one is a yes too. I have recently read The Screaming Staircase which is quite similar to this one but I didn't really loved so I hope that this is much better.
White is For Witching ❌ This was unusual and weird which I think is Helen Oyeyemi's style and I don't want this book to be my introduction to her so I will pass on this.
The Seance ❌
This one is a pass. I think it has similar themes to Silent Companions and again it made use of a trope that I don't enjoy which is parents losing a child. However I won't unhaul this one just yet, if I liked The Silent Companions and The Winter People I will probably want to read more books with a similar feel.
Rosemary's Baby ⭕️
YES! Just for the principle of it.
The Halloween Tree ⭕️
I love it and I can't wait to finish this, out of the nine books this is what I am most excited for.
