All the Books I’ve read in 2018 Part III

The Hazel Wood

Melissa Albert
The Hazel Wood (The Hazel Wood, #1)

2018
Rating,
I love the premise, Alice's mother was kidnapped and she thinks her grandmother who lives in the Hazel Wood has the answer but what she is about to find out will turn her life around. It's definitely not what I expect the story will be however I did like it and reminds me a bit of the Wayward children series and the Magic or madness series. The middle part was a bit dragging and Alice is not a likeable character but the plot was interesting and the ending would be worth your while.

Truly Devious

Maureen Johnson
Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1)

2018
Rating,
I love Maureen Johnson when I was younger, Devilish is still one of my favourite books so I was excited to read Truly Devious unfortunately this did not satisfy me. So there two storylines and mystery one from the past and another in the present. The plot for the past or the flashbacks are much more interesting than the present, I almost wish for this to be a historical mystery instead. I hope the series redeems itself in book two.

A Rare Book of Cunning Device

Ben Aaronovitch
A Rare Book of Cunning Device (Peter Grant, #6.5)

2017
Rating,
I cannot wait for another installment of this series and I was excited to listen to the audio book, sadly it did not do anything for me. I would rather read the graphic novel companion instead.

Lies Sleeping

Ben Aaronovitch
Lies Sleeping (Peter Grant, #7)

2018
Rating,
Noooooo. I was so very much excited to read book 7 and I was so sorely disappointed that it hurts. I was so happy to have a conclusion on the Faceless man storyline but this was book was just a mess. The plot and the phasing was all over the place that I don't even understand what is happening most of the time. I refuse to give up though, I'm still hoping that the next installment will be much better than this.

Rating,
A ray of sunshine after being disappointed with the latest book in the series. Interesting side stories, a very good companion to the series.

Joyland

Stephen King
Joyland

2013
Rating,
This is my first Stephen King book, it's not as popular as his other works and understandably this was not the style of writing that he is really known for however I know that I cannot read his more popular novels (...too scared) and this one just fits my taste. I love how nostalgic this book makes me feel, I miss the good old days where there are no cellphones, no social media and everyone goes out and explore and get into all sorts of trouble. I love the setting, the atmosphere, the narration and just about everything in this book.

Chilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of SabrinaChilling Adventures of Sabrina

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Issues #1 to #8

2016 - 2018
Rating,
This was really creepy and graphic in demon worship and with blood and gore. A twist on the popular Sabrina the teenage witch franchise.

Bonfire

Krysten Ritter
Bonfire

2017
Rating,
Yes, it's that Krysten Ritter. I love her as an actress and I hope she brought some of her spank and wittiness into this. It was your typical detective thriller novel with a side of small town girl making it into the big city and coming back to her home town. The ending was really satisfying though, that what saved this novel for me.

Murder Most Unladylike: A Wells and Wong Mystery

Robin Stevens
Murder Most Unladylike: A Wells and Wong Mystery (Wells and Wong Mystery, #1)

2014
Rating,
I love Sherlock retellings, I was choosing between this series and A Study in Charlotte and I was happy that I went with this instead. It was fun and charming.

Missing, Presumed

Susie Steiner
Missing, Presumed (DS Manon, #1)

2016
Rating,
This was OK bordering on boring, just another run of the mill police procedural thriller. I am still contemplating on reading the second installment because I do love mystery series. I like the feeling of familiarization I get when reading this types of books.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow

Jessica Townsend
Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1)

2017
Rating,
Definitely gives me the Harry Potter feels. I love the world and the children with special powers. This is very fluffy and a feel good middle grade fantasy book. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment.

Meddling Kids

Edgar Cantero
Meddling Kids

2017
Rating,
Meddling Kids is a bit tedious to read. The phasing doesn’t work and leads to a anticlimactic ending, the dialogue does not feel natural and very cheesy at times. It is unfortunate how I felt about this book, the premise was very promising, a group of young adults investigating mysteries.

Sunday Post: Another Year Ending and Other Bookish Updates

I can't believe that 2019 is almost over. I am so sad that I did not get to a lot of my goals this year, I was only able to read 27 books so far and I don't think I could reach my goal of 50 but I will definitely try to do my best to do that. I also have a lot of plans for my blog that did not materialize but there's still next year so I don't feel too bad about that. I recently spruced up my shelves and removed a lot of books that I did not finish - check my post here . My TBR is now down to 456 books which could be better if I have not been adding more books this year, click here if you want to see my book hauls for this year. I will be postponing my Short Story Reading Project and move it to next year because I want to focus on finishing my backlog of books. One of the things that I will be prioritizing is my Try a Chapter Book Tag - Horror picks because I do want to join the Fraterfest 2019 Readathon . I will also try to finish the books recommended to me by

Unveiling My Literary Treasures: My All-Time Favorite Books That Captivated My Soul

Around ten years ago, when I began delving into reading more seriously and keeping track of the books I read, I came across most of the books on this list. It's worth noting that my ratings may seem a bit skewed, as not all of them are rated with the highest five-star rating. This is because I have specific criteria for my ratings. Even if a book deeply moved me and evoked strong emotions, if I didn't find the writing style or storyline compelling enough, it could still receive a four-star rating. On the other hand, there are books I've given five stars to that I can't recall what initially appealed to me. Ratings, in my opinion, are subjective, and I acknowledge that I can't always be completely logical or critical when assigning them. Naturally, I have my biases towards certain genres or tropes.  Out of the 343 books on my shelf, I have selected 15 that have earned either a five-star or four-star rating. These books represent the cream of the crop, so to speak, an
