In the oversaturated market of thriller books, I constantly find myself grappling with the lack of truly gripping reads. I can't help but question whether the issue lies with my own preferences. Am I the one to blame? To borrow from a popular meme, am I the drama? My Goodreads read list seems to be filled with mediocre ratings, leaving me increasingly fatigued by hastily written books driven solely by commercial motives.
The last time I came across a four-star book was back in January, when I read Vanishing Falls by Poppy Gee. While it doesn't strictly fall under the thriller genre, it had intriguing mystery elements. Sadie by Courtney Summers, on the other hand, counts as a phenomenal five-star thriller, but again it's been quite some time since I delved into its pages. Unfortunately, good thrillers seem to be few and far between.
In an attempt to explore more popular thriller releases, I've recently encountered three books that ended up as DNFs for me this year.
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager is about a woman who moves back in her childhood house which is famous for being a haunted house as his father has written a book about their experience living in the house, sounds familiar right? The plot was boring and repetitive and ridiculous. The main character, Maggie is a prime example of a male author writing a female, "feminist" who is whiney and annoying as hell. So that's a pass for me.
Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney is about a married couple who hates each other so I don't understand why they went in a trip together in the first place. The story line was tedious to go through and with all the information dumped on the reader it is still all very boring and uninteresting. Talk about ridiculous, face blindness, really? The good old alcoholism and black outs doesn't cut it for the readers anymore, I guess. Next please and no I am not bitter.
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins has girl drama, boy drama and murder in an isolated island. Not thrilling nor suspenseful but it did leave me confused. Read at your own risk.
A captivating storyline is what truly engages me when it comes to books. In the realm of thrillers, maintaining a well-paced narrative is also crucial for sustaining my interest. Furthermore, I highly value the presence of well-developed characters whose actions and choices resonate and contribute to the overall coherence of the story. Additionally, I find great appreciation for books that exhibit intelligent writing, featuring clever lines or dialogues that enhance the reading experience. I believe it's important not to hesitate in setting aside a book if it fails to captivate you. Don't waste your time on undeserving reads and instead, keep searching for that next exceptional ✰✰✰✰✰ book.
Here's to hoping you discover your next five-star read in due time.
